New Device Means Fewer Needle Sticks At Local Children’s Hospital

TEMPLE (November 28, 2012)-You might cringe at the idea of having your blood drawn or being hooked up to an IV line. Many have had the fear of needles since they were kids, but one revolutionary device being used at McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White in Temple could be preventing that fear ten fold.

Since September, the hospital has been using a device called Vein Viewer. With infrared light, the Vein Viewer projects vein real-time on the skin.

It's clinically proven to reduce the number of attempts to start an IV line and the time it takes to start an IV line by 50 percent.

Cassie Campbell, Nurse Manager for Emergency Medicine, says the Vein Viewer is her best friend.

"It's probably the best thing a nurse can have around," Campbell said.

"The children in the hospital only get one stick with the needle instead of 2 or 3."

The device is especially valuable for children with hard to find veins. McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White can use it on any patient they receive.

"It eliminates the pain and the anticipation," Campbell said.

"Especially for children getting stuck with an IV line."

Scott & White's Memorial Hospital has older models of the device but only in their Interventional Radiology department.

Could they start using it more there? Administrators say anything is possible.

Regardless, It certainly has made an impact at McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White.

"The children can come in and know that we can treat them and help them," Campbell said.

"It's that, instead of being the place known for causing pain."
