BELTON (December 16, 2012)--After part of its original church is damaged after a fire, Christ the King Catholic Church had its Masses this weekend in the parish hall and is working on rebuilding with some help from the community.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and the newer part of the church is getting repaired for smoke damage.

A fire during a midnight Vigil Mass on Wednesday left the original part of the church, built in 1969, damaged and unusable.

"People were married in this church and baptized in this church, this little chapel here, and so I think that there's a sense of shock and a sense of sadness because we've had so many years of worshipping God in this place," said Father James Misko.

The church continues to meet and stay strong in its faith.

Mass was held this weekend in the parish hall.

"A very powerful weekend for the parish with joy and happiness that no one got injured and a true theological sense that we are the church, and this parish hall over here doesn't look like a church, it looks like a parish hall but it will 100 percent fully church because the church will be in the hall, which is the people," Father Misko said.

While Christ the King Catholic Church picks itself up, it's getting some help from another church one town over.

St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple sold tamales today to help Christ the King rebuild.

"Bad things happen, and it just seems like a lot of things right now, so to be able to bring a little hope and a little support to a terrible tragedy, I'm happy to do it," said Amy Castillo, a member of St. Mary's Women's Group.

"It is exactly what Christ taught us...those who suffer, those who are in pain, we have to help them out," said Father Ranjan Cletus, priest of St. Mary's.

All 100 dozen of tamales sold out within minutes.

Christ the King is scheduled to resume all masses in the newer part of the church starting next weekend.
