WACO (January 7, 2013)--A University High School football quarterback was arrested Saturday, charged with sexual assault, and then bonded out of jail the same day.

Charles Edward Johnson III, 17, posted a $20,000 bond Saturday and was released, according to McLennan County Jail records.

Johnson was arrested earlier Saturday after a female whose age wasn’t released reported she was sexually assaulted at around 11 p.m. Friday while sitting in a vehicle in front of Johnson’s home, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said in a Waco police news release.

The victim was able to leave the residence in the 2400 block of South 12th Street and then called police to report the assault, Swanton said.

Officers returned to the address at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and took Johnson into custody.

Crime scene technicians and victim services units also were sent to the scene.

Johnson is listed on the 2012 University High School football roster as a junior quarterback.

The Waco ISD issued a brief statement Monday afternoon saying that it and University High School “are extremely disappointed and concerned that one of our student athletes was arrested over the weekend. The goal of our athletic program is to teach the skills necessary to participate and compete in sports, but we also strive to instill the values of leadership, good behavior, mutual respect, camaraderie and community service.”

A district spokesman said Johnson has been suspended from all athletic activity pending the outcome of an investigation.
