Local Man Accused Of Firearms Theft Goes On Trial

By: Paul J. Gately Email

WACO (October 15, 2012)--Jury selection was underway Monday in U.S. District Court in Waco in the trial of a man accused of participating with others to steal more than a dozen firearms from a Central Texas gun dealer.

James Ray Martin, Jr., is charged with conspiracy to possess a stolen firearm.

A federal court document says in February 2011, Martin, along with two other men, conspired to steal firearms from a licensed federal firearms dealer in Heidenheimer.

The particular firearm in question is a Glock Model 27, .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

The court document says during the theft of the Glock, 12 other firearms were stolen from A&C Firearms on U.S. Highway 190 in Heidenheimer, as well.

Deputies of the Bell County Sheriff's Office were sent to the business in response to a burglar alarm.

As the investigation progressed, it became apparent that several individuals were involved, not only in the burglary, but also in the buying and selling of the stolen firearms.

On February 8, 2011, Temple Police Department received a call of shots fired at the Raintree Apartments in Temple.

Officers sent there interviewed a number of individuals about the shooting and were told that the suspects had all left the area.

A short time later a man who was identified as a witness to the shooting was stopped at the Canyon Creek Town homes.

He was carrying a backpack that contained marijuana and one of the firearms stolen from the gun shop.
