Local Man Overpowers Intruder, Holds Him Until Deputies Arrive

A local man awakened by an intruder who attacked him while he was still in bed managed to overpower his assailant and was holding him in the yard of his home when deputies arrived.

BELL COUNTY (February 20, 2014) A Bell County man awakened Thursday by an intruder who attacked him while he was still in bed managed to overpower his assailant and was holding him in the yard of his home when sheriff’s deputies arrived.

The deputies who responded to a report of the burglary Thursday morning at 15417 Maxdale Rd. south of Killeen arrived to find two men in the front yard, one of whom was holding a baseball bat, sheriff’s Lt. Donnie Adams said.

The man with the bat turned out to be the homeowner, Bernard Gill, Adams said.

Gill was asleep in a bedroom when he was awakened by a loud crash, Adams said.

“Mr. Gill stated that before he could get up to investigate a subject enter his bedroom and began striking him while he still in bed,” Adams said.

Gill overpowered the man and hold him until deputies arrived, Adams said.

Margarito Sanchez, 34 who lives nearby at 15245 Maxdale Rd., was in the Bell County Jail Thursday evening facing burglary of a habitation charges.
