MART (March 18, 2014) Mart police Chief David Monthey escaped serious injury Tuesday in a highway crash that totaled his 2009 Chevrolet Impala patrol car.
The accident happened as Monthey was making a U-turn on Highway 164 just outside of Mart to check on a woman who was walking on the side of the road.
Monthey said he turned on the patrol car’s overhead lights before making the turn on what appeared to be a clear highway, but the driver of a 2012 GMC extended cab pickup apparently didn’t see them.
The pickup, which was traveling at an estimated speed of 70 miles per hour, clipped the front end of the patrol car, causing extensive frame and body damage, Monthey said.
“This goes to show you what can happen when people are distracted while driving,” he said in a Facebook post.
The driver of the pickup, who wasn’t injured, wasn’t cited, but could be later.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating.
