KILLEEN (March 8, 2013)--A Killeen woman was free on bond Friday after she was arrested Thursday on a warrant stemming from the theft of thousands of dollars from the regional nonprofit public sector software users group, of which she was the treasurer.

Cynthia Leole Crawford, 52, posted $20,000 bond Thursday and was released from the Bell County Jail.

She’s charged with theft over $1,500, but under $20,000.

The charge stems from the theft of more than $18,000 from a bank account in which a shortfall was reported, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The shortfall was discovered after Crawford resigned as treasurer of
the South Central SunGard Public Sector Users Group Association, Inc., which was formed in 1988 “to further the continued improvement and expansion of SunGard Public Sector products and services,” according to the group’s website.

At a meeting of the group before her resignation, Crawford reported there was $2,618 in the nonprofit’s checking account and $31,115 in its savings account.

But when the group’s new treasurer checked on the accounts, she discovered the shortfall in the checking account, the affidavit said.

Police investigators interviewed Crawford and she admitted taking the money for her own use, the affidavit said.
