LORENA (November 30, 2012)--A Lorena woman has been sentenced to serve five years in prison after she pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a wreck on Interstate 35 that killed her 9-year-old daughter.

State District Court Judge Matt Johnson ordered Mirelia Meza to serve five years in state prison and 10 years on probation following her release.

Meza, 40, was charged in connection with the multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in December 2009 that investigators was caused when a make-shift trailer hitch on her vehicle failed.

Customs and Border Protections Agents later arrested her at the Port of Entry in Hidalgo as she tried to enter the United States.

The Dec. 8, 2009 crash claimed the life of her daughter Isabela Ochoa and injured her then 7-year-old daughter Ruby Meza.

Mirelia Meza was driving a Pontiac Aztec south on Interstate 35 when a minivan the Aztec was towing worked loose of the hitch to which it was secured and rolled onto the highway in Lorena, investigators said.

The driver of an 18-wheeler that was following the Pontiac attempted to avoid the minivan, swerving into the median ditch where the rig struck a large concrete barrier that was pushed at least two feet into the northbound lane.

The driver of a northbound 18-wheeler attempted to avoid the displaced barrier, but lost control of the rig, which jackknifed and overturned.
