Some residents are using window units to cool their apartments.
WACO (July 2nd, 2012)-- The heat is on for some residents living in the Ashton Oaks Apartment Complex at 5401 Hawthorne Dr. in Waco.
The Ashton Oaks apartment manager told News 10 that if a tenant's central AC stops working, the complex will provide a window unit.
However, some residents we spoke with at Ashton Oaks say when their AC went out, they weren't offered a unit.
"I was never offered a window unit of any kind," Julia Matlack said.
Julia has been living at Ashton Oaks since January, but has been living without central air since April.
"July is going on 4 months without AC in my apartment," Matlack said.
After numerous phone calls and letters to management, Julia took matters into her own hands.
She bought her own window units, and says she's now out $650.
Julia says since her AC hasn't been fixed since April, her rent should be lowered.
"If not reimburse me for my window units, then give me money off every month until they fix the problem."
Even so, Julia isn't alone.
She says she knows of a dozen other apartments that are having trouble too...
"Our air barely works at all," Amanda Elmore said.
"We have no A/C, and had to buy our own window units," Diana Busch said.
The apartment manager for Ashton Oaks was unavailable for comment this afternoon.
But after we spoke with her yesterday, Julia said she was given $100 off her rent for June and July.
However, she says it's still not enough.
"It shouldn't take someone having to come out and investigate for them to do what's right." Matlack said.
The residents we spoke all said they have had no central air, and purchased their own window units.
They also said that they were never given a time or date, as to when their AC would be fixed.
