WACO (September 26, 2011)-Brian Dunks, pastor of the Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, abruptly resigned his position Sunday during an early worship service.

Congregants said Dunks took the pulpit Sunday during the 8:30 a.m. service and announced he was leaving the ministry.

Dunks announced he was seeking counseling to help him deal with his personal problems, according to people who were there.

A spokesman for the church said Monday Dunks made his decision in light of personal problems.

Associate pastor Rick Cadden said Dunks committed no criminal act or infraction of moral turpitude but was dealing with personal issues that led him to feel he could no longer serve as the church's pastor.

Cadden said the church would begin a search for a new senior pastor at once.

Dunks left the church with his family on Sunday and the church's web page no longer reflects his association with the congregation.

Dunks began his pastorate at Columbus Avenue in 2007 after he served the First Baptist Church in Salado.

Dunks also served as pastor at Eastwood Baptist Church in Gatesville, in past years.
