Local Police Officers Cleared In Suspect Taser Death

By: Paul J. Gately Email

WACO (June 9, 2011)—Four Waco police officers were cleared Wednesday of any responsibility in the 2010 death of a man who was subdued with a stun gun after he confronted officers in South Waco.

A preliminary autopsy report released in February said Rodney Green, 36, later died at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center of "Toxic effects of cocaine and the physiologic stress associated with police struggle compounded by cardiac hypertrophy and asthma."

District Attorney Abel Reyna said officers Anita Gomez, D. J. Adams, Daniel Kent and Jason Taylor followed department policy, procedure and state law in their attempts to subdue Green.

The decision not to indict in the incident ends the investigation, Reyna said.

Police used a Taser to subdue Green during a confrontation on Thanksgiving Day.

The autopsy also found Green suffered from cardiac hypertrophy, an abnormal enlargement of the heart muscle.

Green was involved in a traffic accident at about 6:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at the intersection of South 12th Street and Bagby Avenue where the car he was driving struck a pole.

Police, meanwhile, had received a report about a man near the accident scene who was acting strangely.

An officer found the man, who was later identified as Green, and determined he was experiencing some type of difficulty.

Police say the vehicle involved in the accident was registered to Green.

He called for backup and when it arrived, the officers tried to get Green to identify himself.

Green continued to act strangely, however, and when he began walking into the roadway, the officers took action to protect themselves, police said, eventually using a Taser to subdue him.

Another officer arrived and used ankle cuffs to try to restrain Green, who was able to break them almost immediately, police said.

Then Green became unresponsive and the officers called for an ambulance.

Police officers were placed on administrative leave after the death.
