LOS FRESNOS (July 6, 2013)—Margaret Gil, 32, of McAllen, the lone survivor of crash that left five people dead, faces multiple criminal charges, authorities said.
Gil was held without bond Saturday in the Cameron County Jail charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide, Department of Public Safety Sgt. Johnny Hernandez said.
Gil was driving on June 30 near Los Fresnos when her vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a car driven by Edward Gomez, 32, authorities said.
Gomez; his daughter, Kamilla Isabel Gomez, 3; his niece, Julexy Alvares, 13, and his wife, Erika Olaya Davila, 30, were all killed.
Gil's passenger, Carmella Sanchez, 43, also died.
The charges might be upgraded, depending on the results of toxicology tests performed on Gil, authorities said.
