GATESVILLE (June 20, 2014) A Coryell County man died Thursday night when his ATV rolled off a high riverbank then landed on top of him in the riverbed below.
William King, 73, of Coryell County, was pronounced dead at the scene near Coryell County Roads 315 and 344, southeast of Gatesville, Coryell County Sheriff Johnny Burks said.
King was leading two other men on a feral hog hunt Thursday night near a bend in the Leon River.
Burks said King drove too close to the edge of the riverbank on his ATV, which slid down to 15- to 20-foot embankment and landed on top of him.
The two other with him scrambled down the riverbank and pulled the ATV off him, but by then he was not breathing, Burks said.
Coryell County Justice of the Peace Coy Latham pronounced King dead at the scene and has ruled the death accidental.
