SAN ANTONIO (July 31, 2014) A man died early Thursday morning in an exchange of gunfire with a San Antonio police officer who was responding to a report of a cfar theft.
The officer spotted the man crouching behind a car, San Antonio police chief William McManus said.
The man ran and the officer followed him, he said.
Then the man jumped a fence, stopped and opened fire on the officer, who fired back, McManus said.
The man fled, but the crew of a police helicopter later spotted his body in a nearby field.
His name wasn’t immediately released.
The officer was placed on administrative leave until an investigation is completed, which is standard protocol in such cases, McManus said.
