Police Make Arrest In Local Drive-By Shooting

WACO (February 24, 2014) A suspect was in custody Monday in connection with a weekend drive-by shooting in Waco.

Derrick Caver, 32, was in the McLennan County Jail Monday charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

His bond was set at $150,000, according to online records.

A Hillsboro police officer arrested him after officers pulled him over at around 7:45 p.m. Sunday at mile marker 368 on Interstate 35, Hillsboro police spokeswoman Officer Paula Bettis said.

A McLennan County Sheriff's deputy arrived at the location,took Caver into custody, drove him to the McLennan County Jail for booking and had the car he was driving towed to the Waco police impound lot for an evidence search, Bettis said.

The shooting was reported just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday after Demarcun Levi, 30, drove up to a Dollar General store in the 1700 block of West Waco Drive and told bystanders he had been shot.

Levi told officers he was driving west in the 900 block of West Waco Drive when the he heard several gunshots and was hit twice in the back.

He was able to tell investigating officers who shot him, police said.

Levi was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

Information about his condition wasn’t available.

He was the only person in the vehicle.
