WACO (January 28, 2013)--A toddler and his father who were attacked by a dog Sunday afternoon were recovering from their injuries on Monday.

The child was bitten in the face and the father was bitten on the arms while trying to protect the child, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Monday.

The two were bitten at around noon Sunday in the 300 block of Bowers Street and were both taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

Swanton said the investigating officer's report showed that the man and boy were playing with a ball when the dog, a Great Pyrenees, became agitated and attacked the child.

The child’s grandmother owned the dog, which was surrendered to animal control officers.

The dog will be euthanized and tested for rabies, Swanton said.

Swanton said the dog owner was cited for keeping an un-neutered animal without a permit and for failing to have the animal's vaccinations up to date.
