WACO (March 17, 2014) A Waco police accident reconstruction team was working Monday to gather evidence in a weekend auto-pedestrian accident that left a local veteran dead.

Randy Sommerfelt, 60, who was visually impaired, was struck by an SUV driven by a teenager Saturday morning as he walked in a bicycle lane on Park Lake Drive.

He later died at a local hospital.

The teenager who was involved in the crash, Monica Juarez-Salazar, 18, wasn't injured, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

The accident happened at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Park Lake and North 22nd Street when a westbound Chevrolet Tahoe veered into the bicycle lane in which the man was walking west, Swanton said.

Sommerfelt was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 9 a.m.

An autopsy was ordered.
