FREEPORT (August 19, 2013)--A man who fell from his sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast survived by swimming about 3 miles to shore.
The Coast Guard on Sunday didn't immediately release the name of the 51-year-old man, who was wearing a life jacket.
The Brazoria County Sheriff's Department called the Coast Guard Saturday night to report that a sailboat washed up on Surfside Beach with no one aboard.
The Coast Guard in Houston and Freeport launched a search by air and boat and about an hour later searchers spotted the man on the beach in an area where the sailboat was recovered.
The man told rescuers he fell off the boat and swam to shore.
Further details on his condition weren't immediately released.
