TEMPLE (May 23, 2013)—A man who was changing a tire on his 2013 Chevrolet SUV on the northbound access road of Interstate 35 in Temple died late Thursday morning when a passing pickup truck struck him.

Police identified the victim as William Craig Holland, 69, of Roanoke.

Holland pulled off to the side of the service road and was in the process of changing the tire when a second motorist driving a Jeep stopped and offered to help.

The driver of the pickup truck evidently didn’t see the two vehicles stopped on the side of the road.

Although the truck's driver appears to have attempted to avoid a crash, the pickup struck Holland and both of the vehicles, police said.

Witnesses rushed to help Holland until firefighters and paramedics arrived, but efforts to save the man were unsuccessful, police said.

Holland was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was hurt.

The accident is under investigation.

The northbound access road was closed to traffic in the area of the accident and traffic on the interstate slowed.
