Man Arrested In Texas In Death Of Former College Football Player

BATON ROUGE, La. (March 6, 2012)—A 22-year-old Louisiana man was in custody Tuesday in Houston in the shooting death of a former Southern University football player who was killed Saturday as the two men rode in a vehicle on Interstate 110.

A university police officer found Walter Jerome Fort of Zachary, La. Monday on the Texas Southern University campus by a university police officer, Sgt. Don Kelly said.

Kelly said Fort will be returned to Baton Rouge and booked into Parish Prison on one count each of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

Fort is charged in the shooting death of Silas Roderick Gibbs, 24, of Baker, La.

Police found Gibbs dead Saturday in the passenger seat of a vehicle stalled on I-110.
