Local Man Receives 14 Year Sentence After Pleading Guilty To Murder

WACO (February 3, 2012)--A Waco man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and murder.

Bronshae Lonell Robinson, 26, was charged in the Nov. 7, 2010 shooting that left Montrell Phenix, 23, of Waco, dead of multiple gunshot wounds.

Robinson was arrested three days after the shooting.

Police say Phenix and Robinson were involved in a traffic accident around 4 a.m. in the area of Forrest and League Streets, after which they exchanged words and Phenix was shot several times.

Phenix was taken to Providence by private vehicle but doctors were unable to save him.

Assistant District Attorney J.R. Vicha said under the circumstances, taking the 14-year sentence “was better than the risk involved if we went to trial.”

"The (victim's) family isn't happy about it, but they understand,” he said.

"We got (Robinson) off the streets for 14 years and some cases just have to be judged on their merits,” he said.
