Nearly 50 Hurt In Massive Crash In Thick Fog On Texas Interstate

BEAUMONT (November 22, 2012)--Two people died, nearly 50 people were injured and traffic was stopped Thursday morning on Interstate 10 in Southeast Texas after a massive traffic accident in thick fog.

The chain reaction crash involving about 100 vehicles happened at around 8 a.m. Thursday on I-10 southwest of Beaumont.

Acadian Ambulance spokeswoman Denise Richter told KFDM-TV that at least 35 patients were taken to area hospitals.

Officials at Acadian Ambulance service later said that at least 48 people were taken to area hospitals.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis said one person died after the crash, but declined to provide details.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll said the fog in the area was extremely dense at the time of the crash.

I-10 was shut down in both directions Thursday morning because of the crash.

Early Thursday afternoon the westbound lanes of the highway had been reopened, but the eastbound lanes remained closed.
