NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (May 1, 2013)—Police in North Richland Hills have issued an appeal for the public’s help in the search for a missing 14-year-old girl who’s believed to be with a 26-year-old man whom she evidently met online.
Ruby Contreras has been missing since April 24 when she failed to return home from school in Haltom City.
A police request for a statewide Amber Alert wasn’t granted.
Investigators think the girl is traveling by bus with Stephan Cox and said the two may have been seen together in El Paso.
Contreras is 4-foot-11, weighs 95 pounds and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Cox is 5-foot-5 and weighs about 130 pounds.
Cox was supposed to go on trial next week in Columbus, Ohio on sex charges in a case involving another girl, who’s also 14, but he took off last week and headed for Texas, authorities said.
Cox was under house arrest and was ordered to wear an ankle monitor.
"The information that we received is that he told his probation officer that he was going for a job interview, and he apparently cut his ankle monitor off and fled to Texas,” Columbus police Detective Ronald Grocki said.
"It's very highly likely that he could be involved in some form of human trafficking. And that's the biggest concern for this 14-year old girl, that he may take her across the border into Mexico,” Grocki said.
