The Department of Public Safety said Monday Joseph E. McDonald, 23, died as a result of his injuries. A DPS Trooper said the man was a Fort Hood soldier and was riding with several other motorcyclists when the accident happened.
Killeen DPS trooper Matias Falcon said that he was called out to a motorcycle traffic crash in Bell County along FM 2843. During his initial investigation, it was found that a black male was riding with a group of motorcyclists heading West on FM 2843.
During the ride, the man failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway.
He traveled several feet through the grass before hitting a dirt culvert. This caused the bike to go airborne for several more feet.
The motorcycle hit the ground and rolled several times throwing the man from his bike.
Those riding with the man informed DPS that he was wearing a helmet, but one could not be found during the initial search.
Officials at the hospital later found the helmet and returned it to the family.
The Salado Volunteer Fire Department was on hand to direct traffic that was down to one lane for several hours.
