GATESVILLE (June 14, 2013)-A human skull that was found on May 5 in the Leon River in Gatesville now is believed to have been stolen during a theft in Hamilton County.

A news release issued Friday by the Gatesville Police Department says the investigation led detectives to a report of a theft in Hamilton County on April 27 in which a skull was listed as one of the stolen items.

News 10 contacted the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office on Friday, but deputies there refused any comment, saying they had no information to release about the incident.

Two men found the skull floating in the river in Brown Park, located in the 100 block of East Leon Street, fished it out of the water and took it to the Gatesville police station.

Gatesville police Chief Nathan Gohlke said officers went to the area and conducted a search of the park and the riverbanks but were unable to find any other bones.

In the Friday news release Gohlke said "During the course of the investigation, Investigators from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department contacted Gatesville Police and said that the skull may have been taken in a reported theft in Hamilton County."

Gatesville police later confirmed that the skull was one of several items reported stolen in Hamilton County.

Police believe information they gathered showed following the theft the skull was thrown in the river.

The skull was released to Hamilton County Investigators on Tuesday.
