MCGREGOR (May 5, 2014) A two-vehicle accident Monday in McGregor resulted in a natural gas leak that forced the evacuation of about 100 homes, police said.
The leak was repaired just before 4 p.m., roads in the area of were reopened and residents were allowed to return home, but natural gas service to the city was cut off.
One of the vehicles involved in the accident hit a valve and ended up on top of a pipeline, causing the leak.
An area south of the intersection of South Main Street and 7th Street was evacuated and closed off until a crew from Atmos repaired the leak.
A police official said the car that ended up hitting the pipeline could have exploded.
