New Charges Filed Against Central Texas Man In SXSW Crash

Twenty additional charges have been filed against a Central Texas man already charged with capital murder in a deadly crash during Austin’s South by Southwest Festival.

AUSTIN (April 1, 2014) Rashad Owens, 21, of Killeen, who’s accused of plowing through a crowd during Austin’s South by Southwest Festival, was facing 20 additional charges of aggravated assault Tuesday.

Jail documents posted online Tuesday listed the additional charges.

He was already been charged with one count of capital murder in the March 13 incident.

Police say Owens was fleeing from an officer after a traffic stop when he plowed through the crowd of concertgoers on Red River Street in downtown Austin.

Two people died at the scene and two others later died in hospitals.

More than 20 others were injured.

Each new charge is punishable by 99 years in prison. Owens is in jail with bail set at $3 million.

No new murder charges were listed, although more could be added later.
