New Charges Filed Against Local Man In Deadly SXSW Crash

Additional charges have been filed against a local man who’s been in custody since a driver plowed through a crowd at Austin’s SXSW festival.

AUSTIN (April 18, 2014) Rashad Owens, 21, of Killeen, who’s already charged with capital murder in connection with a deadly crash during Austin’s South by Southwest Festival, has been named in four new complaints.

Owens has been charged with four additional counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Travis County Jail records showed Friday.

He was charged earlier with 20 counts of the same offense.

Documents filed in the case say Owens was trying to escape from an Austin police officer when he crashed through a street barricade and plowed into a crowd on March 13, killing two outfight and injuring more than 20 others, who of whom later died.

He was charged with capital murder days after the incident.

His bonds now total $5.1 million.
