SAN ANTONIO (December 28, 2013) A newborn whose body was found at a recycling center in San Antonio was a boy, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said.
The cause and manner of the infant’s death have not yet been determined.
An employee working at the beginning of the sorting line found the body on a conveyor belt just before 1 p.m. on Monday, Waste Management spokeswoman Lisa Doughty said.
The facility immediately stopped operations at that time and police were called, she said.
Police say if the medical examiner's office determines the child was not stillborn, their investigation could become a capital murder case.
Doughty said Waste Management has provided police with records of all the trucks that arrived at the facility between Saturday and noon on Monday.
Police completed their onsite investigation late Monday.
Doughty says the center reopened early Tuesday.
Investigators think the body, which was inside a blue duffel bag, was dumped in the trash sometime between Saturday and Monday morning.
