Off-Duty Texas Officer Interrupts Robbery, Kills Suspect

HOUSTON (February 17, 2014) An off-duty Houston police officer who interrupted a beating and robbery shot and killed one of the teenage suspects.

Houston police say a second suspect, who’s a juvenile, was arrested after the shooting Sunday night.

Police say the officer was driving his own vehicle when he spotted two people attacking a person who had just walked out of a convenience store.

The officer ordered the two suspects to stop, police said.

One of the two was armed and began walking toward the officer while displaying a pistol, police said.

Authorities identified the suspect Monday as Oscar Gaspar, 17.

The officer, who had remained in his vehicle, feared for his life and shot the armed suspect, police spokesman John Cannon said.

Cannon said the officer took what he thought was the appropriate action to keep the beating victim from additional injury.

That person wasn't seriously hurt.
