One Dead, 1 Missing After Horseback Ride Near Swollen Texas River


CANADIAN (June 24, 2014) A girl has been found dead and the search continued Tuesday for a woman still who was missing Tuesday after the two disappeared while riding a horse near the rain-swollen Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle.

Searchers recovered the body of Emily Purcell, 7, of Canadian Monday night in a semi-flooded area near the river.

The search continued Tuesday for Marquita Medrano, 24, of Canadian, the Hemphill County Sheriff's Office said.

Parts of the Texas Panhandle received as much as 4 inches of rain on Sunday, the National Weather Service in Amarillo said.

Emergency personnel were notified Monday night that the girl and woman were missing.

Searchers found their horse near a highway bridge and the girl’s body was found a couple of miles south of the span.
