TEMPLE (June 10, 2013)—A man who used a long-barreled pump action rifle to rob a Temple convenience store and then fled to a waiting truck as the store’s owner fired at him, remained at large Monday, police said.
The robbery was reported just before 11 p.m. Friday at Central Food Mart at 2004 North 3rd Street in Temple.
The victims told officers that the man, whom they described as a light-skinned black, was wearing a gray or white hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and a white cloth over his face when he entered the store, pointed the rifle at them and ordered them to the floor, police said.
The man forced the business owner to open the store’s safe and kicked or struck the clerk who was on duty before escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
The owner of the store got his handgun and opened fire as the robber fled, but missed, police said.
The robber fled on foot, but evidently escaped in a waiting pickup truck, police said.
No one was injured.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the holdup to call the Temple Police Department at (254) 298-5500.
