Package Bomb Explodes Injuring Texas Couple, Daughter, 5

BROWNSVILLE (January 11, 2013)—A Brownsville couple and their 5-year-old daughter were in hospitals with serious burns Friday after a package that they opened inside their home exploded.

Brownsville police spokesman J.J. Trevino says the family found the package outside their home and opened it early Friday morning.

All three victims received extensive burns, but it could have been worse.

The package contained additional devices that didn’t explode and that bomb squad members later detonated.

Trevino said the motive for the attack is unknown.

He says investigators also don’t know whether the family had received earlier threats.

He said there was extensive damage inside the home.

The girl was airlifted to Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston.

Her parents were airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center burn unit in San Antonio.

Their names were not released.
