Parents Of UT Students Receive Hoax Kidnapping Calls

AUSTIN (July 15, 2012)--The FBI is helping campus police at the University of Texas at Austin investigate anonymous hoax phone calls that someone is making to parents of students, claiming their children have been kidnapped.

UT campus police Sgt. Charles Bonnet said two different parents have received calls in the past month and a half from a person with an accent who demanded a small amount of money be transferred into a foreign bank account.

Authorities say no students have been kidnapped.

Investigators say they don't know how the callers are getting parents' telephone numbers.

Bonnet says any parents getting such a call should take good notes and get as much information as they can from the callers in order to help police with their investigation.
