Passenger Who Disrupted Southwest Flight To Undergo Testing

AMARILLO (November 13, 2011)--A Florida man accused of disrupting a Southwest Airlines flight by screaming profanities and damaging a lavatory has been ordered to undergo psychiatric examination.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson ordered physicians to determine whether Ali Reza Shahsavari, 29, is suffering from a mental disorder that leaves him unable to understand the charge against him.

The Amarillo Globe-News reported that the judge approved a request to transport him to an unspecified federal medical center for the exam.

Investigators say the Indialantic man prompted the crew of the Los Angeles-to-Kansas City, Mo., flight to make an emergency landing in Amarillo on Oct. 18.

He was charged with interfering with a flight crew.

Shahsavari’s attorney, Jeff Blackburn, says his client suffered a nervous breakdown on the flight.
