Pilot Dies When Plane Crashes Into Texas Field

SAN MARCOS (November 1, 2012)--Investigators say a pilot has died in the crash of his twin-engine plane into a field at around dawn Thursday in rural Caldwell County.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Robbie Barrera said the plane took off from San Marcos Municipal Airport and was attempting to return.

A person who saw the fireball reported the crash.

Airport spokesman Stephen Alexander says the Cessna evidently burned on impact about a mile south of the airport.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the crash on land operated by the federal Gary Job Corps Center.

Barrera said the area had fog Thursday morning.

The DPS says the pilot from North Dakota was alone on board.

His name hasn't been released.
