Police Kill Texas Man After Nearly 6-Hour Standoff

CORPUS CHRISTI (December 11, 2012)--A Corpus Christi man whom neighbors and police described as mentally ill was shot to death after officers said he opened fire on them following a 5½-hour standoff.

Daniel Christopher Scott, 56, died early Monday after the standoff at his home.

Police Chief Floyd Simpson said Scott called police to his home Sunday night, saying he had armed and barricaded himself and feeling threatened by his neighbors.

Police negotiators worked for hours to try to persuade the man to disarm.

Simpson said Scott finally opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, killing him.

Simpson says two veteran officers have been placed on restricted duty pending investigation, in accord with department policy after a police shooting.
