Police Shoot, Kill Lawyer Who Lived In Texas High-Rise

DALLAS (January 2, 2014) Dallas police shot and killed a resident of a high-rise apartment complex in the city’s Uptown neighborhood early Thursday after he opened fire on officers who responded to a report of a burglary.

Police later identified the man as Dallas lawyer Michael Edward Schmidt, 47.

Deputy police Chief Gil Garza said Schmidt told a building employee that his apartment was being burglarized.

The worker called police.

Meanwhile, Schmidt barricaded himself in a hallway near the lobby until officers arrived, authorities said.

Police are trying to determine why he shot at officers, who then returned fire.

The gunfire shattered lobby windows of the luxury Glass House residences.

Schmidt died at the scene.

Police say a weapon was recovered.

Further details weren't immediately released.

Schmidt joined his father’s law firm in 1992 after earning a degree from the Oklahoma City University School of Law, according to a biography on the firm’s website.
