Police: Inmate Hanged Himself In Texas City Jail

HOUSTON (November 21, 2011)--Robert Gomez, 30, took off his T-shirt and used it to hang himself from his the bars of his jail cell in Houston’s central jail bars about two hours after his arrest Saturday night for public intoxication, police said.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will determine the cause of death.

Police say Gomez, who was combative when he was arrested, was medically screened and cleared by medical personnel before he was taken to an individual cell where other prisoners could see him.

Jail personnel say they provided first aid but it was too late.

Police say their homicide unit and internal affairs division are investigating the in-custody death.
