Substation Shuts Down; Power Briefly Out Over Wide Area Of Waco

WACO (March 14, 2013)—A major outage left at least 5,700 customers temporarily without power Thursday evening in Waco, but by 6 p.m. most service had been restored.

The rush-hour outage cut power to traffic lights at major intersections along Waco Drive, Bosque Boulevard, Franklin Avenue, Valley Mills Drive and other city streets and several accidents were reported.

A city spokesman said the outage was the result of a problem at a substation in the area of North 25th Street and Cole Avenue and said it could be three hours or more before signals are again functional.

But a short time later Oncor spokesman Mike Cain said power has been restored.

What he described as wildlife in the substation triggered an automatic emergency shutoff.

Traffic department crews were in the process of setting up four-way stop signs at affected intersections when service was restored.
