Rangers Investigate Stun Gun Death Of Texas Jail Inmate

LONGVIEW (March 22, 2013)—The Texas Rangers were investigating Friday after Gregg County Jail inmate Bobby Madewell, 51, of Longview died following an incident in which authorities used a stun gun on him when he became violent.

Madewell was pronounced dead Thursday after he was taken to a local hospital from the jail where he’d been held since March 12 on a bond forfeiture on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said that after exhibiting erratic behavior, Madewell resisted officers and became "extremely violent."

The stun gun was then used so he could be subdued and put in restraints.

Records show Madewell had been booked into the jail 16 times since 1986 on various charges.

An autopsy was ordered.
