KILLEEN (August 21, 2013)—A local pilot was forced to crash-land his homemade experimental Brian Douglas BA-100 plane in a wooded area in Killeen after the engine failed, a preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report says.
The crash was first reported by a passerby at around 9:30 a.m. Aug. 10.
The 56-year-old pilot, who wasn’t injured, also called to report the crash, police said.
His name has not been released.
The report says the pilot’s statement and an on-board video showed that the plane’s engine experienced a partial power loss after takeoff from Skylark Field in Killeen.
“While executing a crosswind turn, the engine experienced a total loss of power. The pilot maneuvered to execute a forced landing into trees,” the report said.
