Retired Texas Teacher Training As Firefighter Collapses, Dies

LEAGUE CITY (March 7, 2013—Donald Mize, 62, a retired teacher who began training last month to be a volunteer firefighter in League City, died after collapsing following physical drills.

League City spokeswoman Kristy Wyatt said Mize was taking part in routine physical training Wednesday night at a drill field when he collapsed during a cool-down session.

She said Mize was transported to a hospital where he died.

Wyatt had no information on whether the former teacher in the Clear Creek Independent School District had a history of medical problems.

She said everyone must pass a physical examination before training as a volunteer firefighter.

Wyatt said Mize was also a member of a citizen police academy alumni group.
