HILLSBORO (May 30, 2014) State District Judge F.B. “Bob” McGregor, Jr., ordered mediation Monday after a daylong hearing Friday in a legal battle over the Prairie Valley Baptist Church’s request to hold weekly after-school Bible study sessions at Whitney High School.

“The court is of the opinion that parties appear so close to resolution to the material issue(s)...that the said cause should be ordered to mediation,” McGregor’s ruling said.

McGregor named Waco lawyer Noley Bice to serve as the mediator.

McGregor issued a temporary restraining order about two weeks ago that allowed the church to lead its after-school Worldview Ministry at the high school on May 27 and May 20.

The district says the session is scheduled to start too close to the end of the school day and expressed concerns about allowing outside groups access to the school.

The church is represented by the Liberty Institute, a nonprofit legal group dedicated to defending religious liberty.
