WISD Considers Campus Closures
WACO (December 15, 2011)---After months of discussions regarding shrinking the district's budget by millions of dollars, the Waco ISD Board of Trustees decided Thursday night on two consolidation plans to present in a series of neighborhood meetings in January.
The plans are being referred to as the Orange and Green plans.
Both plans include closing Sul Ross and North Waco Elementary, combining Lake Waco and Alta Vista Montersorri campuses onto Lake Air Intermediate, move A.J. Moore Academy to University High School, and consolidate the district's alternative school and S.T.A.R.S. program to the G.L Wiley campus.
The Orange plan would change G.W. Carver from a magnet program to a traditional, mainstream campus.
The Green plan would also close Viking Hills Elementary and Meadowbrook Elementary.
The district argued one of these plans would be the most efficient way to shrink the budget, however neither proposal was set in stone.
"The board may choose parts of orange or parts of green or maybe something new that they haven't heard," said WISD Superintendent Dr. Bonnie Cain.
The first in a series of five town hall meetings will be held at Waco High School at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 5.
