GRAPEVINE (February 16, 2013)—Alberto Morales, 42, a Florida prisoner who escaped after stabbing a detective with his eyeglasses, was shot to death early Saturday near Dallas following a home burglary.

Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said officers shot Morales just after midnight Saturday morning after chasing the fugitive into a wooded area.

Eberling said at a Saturday news conference that officers instructed Morales to lie on the ground and show his hands, but instead he rushed toward them.

Authorities began searching for Morales after getting a report that jewelry and clothing had been stolen in a home burglary.

Morales was a convicted sex offender who escaped Monday after using a sharp piece from his eyeglasses to stab one of the Miami-Dade detectives who was transferring him by vehicle to Nevada to service a 30-year prison sentence for sexual assault.

The attack happened in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Grapevine.

Eberlin said investigators believe Morales had been planning his escape for some time.
