VALLEY MILLS (September 16, 2013)--Sheriff's investigators were back at the scene Monday after a local rancher found human bones over the weekend, searching for more evidence.
Chief McLennan County Deputy Matt Cawthon confirmed Monday investigators recovered a weapon at the scene.
Cawthon also said deputies believe they know who the individual was, but will not release his identity until it is confirmed through DNA evidence.
The sheriff's office was notified around noon Saturday after the landowners found human remains on their property off Hog Creek Road south of the Valley Mills Airport.
Cawthon said investigators think the remains are those of a man in his 20s who was from McLennan County.
Cawthon said the man was not reported missing, but has not been seen in a while.
The remains were sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, in Dallas, where medical examiners are trying to determine how the man died and confirm his identity using DNA.
Investigators said the man is not associated with the property where his remains were found and they are still looking into how the bones got to that location.
It's the second such discovery in McLennan County this month.
Two sets of human remains were discovered behind a home in Hewitt about a week ago.
