MILAM COUNTY (May 9, 2011)—State and local firefighters were hampered Monday by gusty shifting winds as they battled a wildfire that spread over several hundred acres of land in rural Milam County.

The fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. Monday in a field near FM 485 and County Road 255 in Milam County and quickly spread.

Crews from Gause, Milano, Calvert, Burlington, Buckholts, Rosebud, and Minerva joined the effort to contain the fire, which had charred 400 to 500 acres by Monday evening.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by a hay cutter.

The fire was mostly contained by Monday evening, but continued to burn in a wooded area.

Crews were focused on that area and were working to douse hot spots.

The Texas Forest Service brought in bulldozers to help contain the fire.

The fire was extinguished around 10 p.m. Monday night.
