TEXAS CITY (March 16, 2014) The U.S. Coast Guard says is looking into the cause of a collision in the Houston Ship Channel between a barge loaded with hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil and a cargo ship filled with grain.
No one was injured and no oil spilled from the barge, the Coast Guard said in a press release.
Both vessels were damaged, but were stable after the collision Friday evening, which involved the Genius Star VII and the barge carrying 840,000 gallons of oil.
The release states the barge and the 394-foot cargo ship were taken for damage assessments.
Lt. Cmdr. Zeita Merchant of the Marine Safety Unit Texas City said in the release that a major environmental incident was avoided.
