Mall Shooting Gunman, Victims Identified

COLUMBIA, Md. (January 26, 2014) The gunman who shot two people to death and then killed himself in a skateboard shop in a mall in suburban Maryland has been identified as Darion Marcus Aguilar, 19, of College Park, Md.

Police identified the victims as Brianna Benlolo, 21, of College Park and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Ellicott City, Md., both of whom worked at the skateboard shop called Zumiez in the Mall in Columbia.

Howard County Police Chief Bill McMahon said investigators are trying to determine whether Aguilar knew either of the victims.

Authorities say it took hours to identify Aguilar because he was carrying ammunition and a backpack containing crude homemade explosives.

Police say more ammunition and other evidence was found when officers searched Aguilar's home Saturday night.

McMahon said there are still "a lot of unanswered questions," including a motive.

Police and paramedics responded to the mall in response to a series of 911 reports of gunfire at around 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Officers found three people dead in a store on the second level of the sprawling mall, one of whom was the gunman.

Some employees and customers hid in stockrooms during the incident.

Five other people were injured in the shooting and have since been treated at hospitals and released.
